At the start of last season no-one would have bet big on Aprilia, who had come from a season in which Aleix Espargaró had surprised with a podium finish at Silverstone, the manufacturer's first top-three finish in the four-stroke era of MotoGP.
Maverick Viñales was on the podium at Assen and then climbed back up twice more before returning to a lower level. Aleix remained competitive until the end of the first half of the championship and then lost performance, only getting on the podium in Aragón; in five races he finished outside the points on two occasions and ended up with a ninth place result as his best result.
