Another AMA Supercross Championship kicked off this weekend. Angel Stadium opened the season with Anaheim hosting just one main race on Saturday night, in which Eli Tomac is the defending champion.
With the gates retracted, the riders set off for a 21-lap race, in which Colt Nichols was responsible for taking the holeshot and then securing the race lead in the opening moments. The #45 was overtaken at the next corner by Justin Barcia who, as far as he was concerned, saw Tomac right behind him. Ken Roczen was third.
With the #1 up front, Barcia made a mistake; Roczen moved up to second and Malcolm Stewart took third. Alone and at the front, Tomac also had a crash and Stewart, who was second, inherited the front of the race...until he was pushed by Chase Sexton. The bad luck was not over for Stewart who, at one point, crashed when he was third and quite close to Tomac and Sexton.
In the end, Tomac managed to win the race and secure a 2.7s gap to...Cooper Webb, who still had time to overtake Chase Sexton. Dylan Ferrandis and Ken Roczen finished in the top five.
The next round of AMA Supercross takes place in a week's time at the RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland.
